NBN Co has unveiled a $3 billion network upgrade, supported by an additional $800 million from NBN Co itself, to replace the last sections of Australia’s Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) network with full-fibre (FTTP) connections.
- Scope: About 622,000 homes and businesses nationwide—more than half in regional areas—will gain the option to switch to full fibre.
- Timeline: Work begins immediately and will roll out progressively through 2030, with more than 95 % of premises expected to have an FTTP upgrade path.
- Benefits: Full fibre offers faster, more reliable broadband, supporting the nation’s soaring data needs—average households now use over 400 GB per month and are forecast to exceed 1 TB within a decade.
- Economic Impact: Independent modelling suggests a $10.4 billion GDP boost, around 10,000 new jobs, and 4,000 new businesses over ten years.
- Next Steps: Location-specific upgrade schedules will be announced soon; residents can register for updates at nbnco.com.au/check.
This investment is part of NBN’s wider goal to enable 10 million+ premises—around 90 % of the fixed-line network—to access its fastest wholesale speeds by the end of 2025.
