NBN Launches Nation’s Largest Internet Speed Upgrade

NBN Co media release, 16 September 2025

16 September 2025 – NBN Co has rolled out one of Australia’s most significant broadband upgrades, enabling millions of homes and businesses to access dramatically faster internet through its new Accelerate Great program.

Key Highlights

  • Massive Speed Boosts: Eligible Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) users now see wholesale speeds jump up to five times faster on key tiers.
  • New High-Speed Plans:
    • Home Fast II up to 500/50 Mbps (from 100/20 Mbps)
    • Home Superfast up to 750/50 Mbps
    • Home Ultrafast up to ~1 Gbps/100 Mbps
    • Home Hyperfast up to 2 Gbps/200 Mbps (FTTP)
    • Business 2000 Pro up to 2 Gbps/500 Mbps (FTTP)
  • Eligibility & Reach: More than 9.8 million premises can already order these higher tiers, rising beyond 10 million by year-end, with multi-gigabit capability.
  • Automatic Upgrades: Most customers on applicable plans will receive the faster speeds automatically; a simple home network check ensures maximum benefit.

Why It Matters

Australians’ data usage has surged 10 % in the past year, now averaging 508 GB per month and supporting 25+ connected devices per household—a figure projected to exceed 44 devices and 1.1 TB monthly downloads within the decade. Faster broadband means smoother streaming, more reliable telehealth, cloud-based business tools, and support for emerging digital technologies.

Anna Perrin, NBN’s Chief Customer Officer, said the program is about “empowering Australians to thrive in a digital world”, keeping homes and businesses ahead of ever-growing data demands.

Customers can check eligibility and plan options via their internet provider or at nbnco.com.au.
