NBN Begins Final Stage of Fibre-to-the-Node Upgrades

NBN Co media release, 5 September 2025

NBN Co has started construction on the last phase of its nationwide Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) upgrade program, covering more than 228,000 homes and businesses across Australia.

  • Scale & Investment: Backed by $3 billion in Australian Government funding and $800 million from NBN Co, the program targets the remaining ~622,000 FTTN premises, with more than half located in regional areas.
  • Upgrade Goal: Over 95 % of these locations will gain access to full fibre (FTTP), enabling NBN’s fastest wholesale upload and download speeds.
  • Timeline & Reach: The project supports NBN’s broader plan to deliver near-gigabit speeds to around 11 million premises—about 94 % of the fixed-line network—by 2030. Already, 9.8 million premises can order these top-tier speeds.

Benefits of Full Fibre

Upgrading from copper to fibre means smoother streaming, faster downloads, and more reliable video calls at home, plus improved productivity and seamless cloud access for businesses.

Strong Uptake

Australians are embracing high-speed connections: fibre upgrades grew 115 % last year, with 806,000 completions and the milestone of one million upgrades expected before the end of 2025.
